Arturo Borja (1892-1912) var en poet född i Quito, Ecuador, 1892. Även om hans litterära produktion var mycket kort, anses han vara en av föregångarna till modernismen i sitt land. Tillsammans med tre andra författare bildade han den förfallna generationen, uppkallad efter den tidiga döden av alla dess komponenter.
Borja började skriva i en mycket ung ålder. Hans personlighet, och därför hans huvudtema, präglades mycket av den utbildning som han fick från sin far. Den stränga disciplin som han utsattes för fick alltså honom att växa upp i en mycket repressiv miljö, vilket ökade hans naturliga tendens till depression.

Under en resa till Paris kom författaren i kontakt med flera av de mest kända författarna för tillfället, de så kallade Damned Poets. När han återvände till Ecuador imiterade han vad han hade sett i den franska huvudstaden och ledde en grupp unga författare, alla kännetecknade av deras bohemianism och talang.
1812 gifte han sig och tillbringade flera veckor på sin smekmånad. Bara några veckor senare begick den unga poeten självmord genom överdosering av morfin. Hans arbete publicerades i en specialutgåva av hans vänner 1820.
Biografi
Arturo Borja Pérez föddes i staden Quito (Ecuador) den 15 september 1892. Hans familj hade mycket anmärkningsvärda förfäder, eftersom Borja var en direkt ättling till påven Alexander VI och barnbarn till Ferdinand II av Aragon.
Hans barndom präglades av hans fars personlighet, Luis Felipe Borja Pérez, välkänd i Ecuador för sitt politiska, lagliga och även litterära verk. Enligt poeterens biografier var hans barndom fredlig, men inte lycklig. Detta berodde som sagt på sin fars karaktär.
I familjens hem regerade strikt disciplin. Vissa forskare anser att Arturos far är besatt och alltid medveten om sitt arbete. Det verkar som om fadern införde stränga scheman och strikt disciplin på alla sina barn, vilket slutade undertrycka utvecklingen av Arturos personlighet.
Konsekvensen av denna repressiva utbildning var dikterens benägenhet till depression. Många biografer påpekade att han hade ett avgörande inflytande på självmordet som slutade hans liv.
Å andra sidan var Arturo Borja alltid mycket intresserad av poesi. Han var bara femton när han skrev sina första dikter.
Resa till Paris
Det var just när han skrev att Arturo skadade ögat med pennan. Det är inte känt hur det hände, men faktum är att spetsen på den fjädern blev kala på en av hans ögongulor. För att försöka förbättra skadan, reste dikteren och hans far till Paris 1907, när han bara var 15 år gammal.
Som ett resultat av olyckan var Arturo tvungen att bära en svart bandage på sitt skadade öga i ett år. Detta, medan han fortfarande var tonåring, ökade sina humörproblem och påverkade hans humör.
Enligt biograferna varierade hans attityd beroende på ögonblicket, växlande faser av melankoli och sorg med andra energiska och sällskapliga.
Men den resan till Paris blev en stor möjlighet för den unga poeten. Arturo hade en språkkunnig och deltog i en litteraturkurs i den franska huvudstaden.
Förbannade poeter
Den nämnda litteraturkursen var inte den enda fördelen Borja fick av sin vistelse i Paris. Under den tid han var där kom han i kontakt med de så kallade "förbannade poeterna": Baudelaire, Verlaine, Samain och Mallarmé. Från dem lärde han sig en del av deras skrivstil, livliga och melankoliska.
Inte bara drog han upp litteraturen för dessa poeter, speciellt om Baudelaire, Mallarmé och Rimbaud, utan han fångade också en del av deras beteende. Dessa författare hade ett rykte för att leva på ett bohemiskt sätt och konsumera en stor mängd alkohol och andra droger.
Återgå till Ecuador
Vid 17 års ålder återvände Arturo Borja till sin Ecuador, särskilt till huvudstaden Quito. Det verkar som om Borjas karaktär vid sin återkomst hade förbättrats och kronikarna beskriver honom som en leende ung man. Efter att ha imiterat vad han såg i Frankrike bildade han en litterär grupp och samlade runt sig en serie unga författare.
Bland de mest uppriktiga mot hans möten var Ernesto Noboa Caamaño (med vilken han träffade i Europa), Humberto Fierro och Medardo Ángel Silva, bland andra. Dessa författare lockades inte bara till franska poeter, utan också till Rubén Darío och Juan Ramón Jiménez.
Vid den tiden antog Borja och hans kamrater en bohemisk livsstil, vilket gav kontinuerliga uppvisningar av uppfinningsrikedom och glädje. Hans dikt Madness Mother skrev under denna period.
När det gäller hans personliga liv började Arturo Borja ett fängelse med Carmen Rosa Sánchez Destruge, beskrivet som en vacker Guayaquil av hennes samtida. Uppenbarligen träffades de två ofta på kyrkogården, något som ger indikationer om deras karaktär.
Tidning La Prensa
Borja lämnade sin böhmiska sida lite försökte Borja ta mer ansvar. För detta gick han med på att regissera tidningen La Prensas litterära blad.
Detta medium, ganska nära revolutionära politiska positioner, ägnade stor uppmärksamhet åt grammatik. Konfrontationerna mellan Arturo och en litteraturkritiker i detta ämne slutade utmattande den unga mannen.
Å andra sidan översatte han greven de Lautréamonts "Les Chants de Maldoror" till spanska. Hans arbete publicerades i tidskriften Letras.
Hans fars död
En sorglig händelse orsakade en förändring i livet som Arturo Borja ledde. 1912 dödade hans far och lämnade honom 8000 efterträdare. Poeten beslutade sedan att sluta arbeta och bara ägna sig åt att skriva och göra de aktiviteter som han gillade mest.
Efter att ha fått arvet började Borja också uttrycka sin avsikt att begå självmord när hans fars pengar slutade. Då tog hans vänner inte de orden för allvarligt, och trodde att det bara var ett makaber skämt.
Emellertid påpekar biografer att Borja möjligen började ta morfin vid den tiden, liksom hans kollegor Noboa och Caamaño. Innan han fick arvet hade han inte kunnat förvärva den och genom att kunna betala för det blev han en vanlig konsument.
Äktenskap
Efter en period med dejting gifte sig Arturo Borja och Carmen Sánchez Destruge den 15 oktober 1912, när han var 20 år gammal. Båda åtnjöt flera veckors smekmånad på en gård nära Guápulo.
Som ett tecken på hans känslor ägnade han några dikt åt sin fru, till exempel En el blanco cementerio.
Död
Som nämnts ovan hade ingen av Arturo Borjas vänner och litterära gruppkamrater trott på hans hot att döda sig själv när arvpengarna slutade.
Poeten var dock helt allvarlig. Således den 13 november 1912, när hans smekmånad var över, tog Arturo Borja en överdos av morfin som orsakade hans död.
Enligt tidens kroniker hade båda makarna kommit för att begå självmord tillsammans. Av oförklarliga skäl gjorde Borjas fru inte sin del och förblev vid liv.
Vid den tiden försökte alla släktingar, inklusive änkan, dölja självmordet för att undvika social skandal. Den version som de erbjöd var att han dog av en kollaps.

Arturo Borja dog när han bara var 20 år gammal. Detta orsakade att hans arbete inte var särskilt omfattande, även om experter säger att de är tillräckliga för att bevisa dikterns kvalitet. Det fanns totalt tjugoåtta dikter, majoriteten publicerades postumt i boken La Fluuta del Onix.
Trots denna låga produktion anses Borja vara en av modernismens pionjärer i Ecuador. Tillsammans med resten av komponenterna i den halshuggade generationen förde de till landet en ny stil för att skriva poesi, både vad gäller stil och ämne. .
Hans tidiga verk visar lite optimistisk inställning, vilket framgår av hans verk Summer Idyll. Men med tiden utvecklades hans författare mot ett mer olyckligt tema, där döden spelade en mycket ledande roll.
Kritikerna bekräftar att dikterna visar en djup förtvivlan, så mycket att det blir en önskan att dö.
Några av hans mest erkända dikter var Madre Locura, Las Flores del Mal och Flixen av Onix.
Den huvudlösa generationen
Arturo Borja var en del av den så kallade Decapitated Generation, en litterär trend som består av fyra ecuadorianska poeter under de första decennierna av 1900-talet.
De ingick i den gruppen, förutom Borja, Medardo Ángel Silva. Ernesto Noboa y Caamaño och Humberto Fierro. De betraktas som modernismens föregångare i deras land och deras verk visar ett tydligt inflytande från de förbannade franska författarna och Rubén Darío.
Uttrycket "halshuggad generation" dök upp långt efter de fyra poeternas död. I mitten av 1900-talet hittade kritiker och litterära journalister likheter mellan författarnas verk och grupperade dem inom samma konstnärliga trend.
Namnet "Decapitated Generation" kommer från förtidens död för de fyra poeterna, som alla dog i mycket ung ålder.
Både Arturo Borja och hans andra tre följeslagare var från överklassfamiljer. Hans poesi kännetecknas av att återspegla existensiell uttråkning, evigt tvivel, tragiska kärleksaffärer och samförståndets missförstånd.
Denna inställning hade sin korrespondens i poeternas livssätt. En introverad attityd rådde, åtföljd av hög droganvändning. Det var kort sagt ett sätt att möta och förkasta ett samhälle som de ansåg dehumaniserade.
Stil och tema
Döden var ett av de vanligaste teman bland modernistiska poeter, och Borja och resten av hans generationskamrater var inget undantag. Flera av hans dikter visar en längtan efter döden och förhärligar hans drag.
Vissa kritiker kopplar denna längtan till ett franska ord som är mycket vanligt bland franska modernister: ennui. Dess betydelse är "ett tillstånd av förlamande likgiltighet och motvilja mot att leva." Det är en definition som passar perfekt i Borjas arbete.
Å andra sidan slutar medlemmarna i den halshuggade generationen att skriva om verkligheten och föreslår det bara genom olika symboler. De beskriver genom dessa litterära anordningar känslor av frustration, förvirring eller harsel.
Som ett exempel på ovanstående pekar experter på dikten On the Way of the Chimeras, av Arturo Borja själv. I detta verk bekräftar poeten att döden är den enda vägen ut ur den smärta och lidande han lider.
Musikalitet
En av de stilistiska kännetecknen i Arturo Borjas verk är musikaliteten i hans skapelser. Även för att beskriva de mörkaste och mest negativa känslorna, som melankoli eller tristess, använde Borja en lysande och melodiös stil.
För att uppnå denna effekt kombinerar författaren vers av olika mått och rytmer, som slutar producera överraskande och nya effekter jämfört med poesin innan hans tid.
Onyx-flöjten
Som noterats innebar Borjas tidiga död att han inte lämnade för många verk. Dessutom riskerade några av dem att gå förlorade och inte bli kända för allmänheten.
Av denna anledning beslutade en grupp vänner till poeten att agera 1820, åtta år efter Borjas död. Det var Nicolás Delgado och Carlos Andrade som tog sig till uppgift att publicera sina dikter i en bok som de kallade "The Onyx Flute".
Redigerad vid Central University, vars tryckpress användes, boken innehåller dikter som "Mystical and Lunar Spring", "Far Vision", "Vas Lacrimae", "The Far Flowers", såväl som andra, alla av stor skönhet.
Bortsett från själva dikterna blev boken en liten pärla tack vare dess illustrationer. Diktarens vänner gjorde ritningarna som åtföljer de 20 kompositionerna och 8 dikter som utgör "The Onyx Flute" själva.

Översättning
Förutom sitt poetiska verk var Arturo Borja författare till en enastående översättning av "Les Chants de Maldoror", av greven av Lautréamont. Tack vare hans kunskaper i franska kunde han publicera sin version på sidorna i "Letters" 1910.
Ditt minne för mig
En av de mest kända dikterna av Arturo Borja är För mig ditt minne. En del av detta erkännande ges till honom av den musikaliska versionen som kompositören Miguel Ángel Casares Viteri gjorde.
Sedan dess har verket utförts av framstående sångare, som Carlota Jaramillo och Bolívar ”El pollo” Ortiz.
